Campus Media Leaders Seminar - December 2014/January 2015

Dates: December 28, 2014 - January 4, 2015

A delegation of 13 students from across the country traveled to Israel with PI over winter break to learn about Israel- its people, culture, and geostrategic dilemmas. All students were leaders in their campus media outlets- whether radio, TV, print, or online- from both private and public universities such as Duke University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Georgia, University of Pennsylvania, and Wellesley College.

Throughout the week, the delegation examined complex issues facing Israel and the region, specifically through the lens of the media. Participants met with Arab Israeli, Palestinian, and Jewish Israeli students, government officials, social entrepreneurs, and journalists. Students particularly enjoyed hearing about the peace process from an important negotiator, learning about reporting in Israel and in the Palestinian Authority from foreign correspondents and local journalists, and learning about daily life near the Gaza Strip. Participants also visited the Old City of Jerusalem, toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, and enjoyed ATV rides through the Judean desert.

The students left Israel with a much stronger understanding of Israel’s complexities, its challenges, and its successes. Many of the students expressed their desire to return to Israel to continue exploring the country and to share their experience with peers back on campus.
