September 26th, 2016

Editor’s Note: Brian Siegel, Director of of AJC’s Miami and Broward County Regional Office, is in Israel with Project Interchange’s delegation of influential Miami entrepreneurs and leaders in the tech start-up community is in Israel with AJC Project Interchange, to learn from the country’s thriving tech and innovation sector while sharing best practices and making connections.

We started the day by driving by driving south to visit Masada. We learned about the complex and challenging history of this historic location and its continued symbolism for Israel and the Jewish people.

We then had a luxurious experience at the Crowne Plaza resort and got to float on the Dead Sea. The group loved this “other worldly experience of buoyancy in the “Sea of Salt.”

We then proceeded to the Old City of Jerusalem for a tour. Seeing the multi-colored tapestry of ethnic, religious and national groups woven together into a vibrant whole was stunning. We wandered through the different quarters and spent time in several Christian holy sites including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Our timing was perfect as we were able to observe religious ceremonies in the Church.

The delegation had the night off, but we all went out together to experience the bustling nightlife and the delightful mix of old and new in Jerrusalem. “this reminds me of nightlife in Miami - I can’t believe Jerusalem has so much fun amidst so much religious devotion,” said one of the delegates.”

After an amazing day at Masada, the Dead Sea and the Old City of Jerusalem, one participant stated, “When I see how Israel creates something from nothing and has done so for a long time, even from bilblical times, I begin to better understand how Israel became the Start up Nation.”
