<itunes:summary>On March 3, Project Interchange hosted an alumni conference call to discuss Israeli civilian activities in Haiti in response to the tragic earthquake of January 12. The call featured Shachar Zahavi and Galit Cohen of IsraAID - Israel’s coordinating body for Israeli civilian responses to natural and man-made disasters.
“There are a lot of unique skills we have developed in Israel that we use in our emergency and our long term programming to help different countries that don’t have those skills in place. We believe that the more we put these skills into action, the better our solutions will be,” said Shachar Zahavi, Executive Director of IsraAID.
Following the earthquake, the Israeli government sent over 200 rescue workers to Haiti, and set up a field hospital. At the same time, Israeli civilian units came to Haiti for relief operations coordinated by IsraAID. “The team was prepared and within 30 hours they started moving toward Haiti. That’s usually how it goes, you have to react fast,” said Zahavi. “It gave me real pride to see how well we operated in Haiti,” added Galit Cohen, who recently returned from Haiti as IsraAID’s field coordinator.
