Dr. Yoram Peri gave a presentation at the DC AJC office during a PI alumni luncheon. Dr. Peri discussed the current political climate leading up to the recent Israeli elections and their domestic and global implications. Dr. Yoram Peri heads the Rothschild-Caesarea School of Communication and the Chaim Herzog Institute for Media, Politics, and Society at Tel Aviv University. He received his PhD in sociology and political science from the London School of Economics. Peri has published five books and numerous scholarly articles, editorials, commentaries, and op-ed pieces. Dr. Peri is the recipient of the Fulbright Award, the Prime Minister Prize, the Israeli Political Science Association Award for the best book of 2006, and the “Best of the Best” Award by the Association of American University Presses, the American Association of School Librarians, and the Public Libraries Association. Dr. Peri is the Dollye and Wolford Berman Visiting Professor of Israel Studies at American University.

Miami and Broward County Chapter of AJC held a program entitled “The Third Annual Thanksgiving Diversity Breakfast” which celebrated the commitment to the pluralistic values that unite AJC and its partners, featuring the newest edition of “America’s Table,” a Thanksgiving Reader. In collaboration with the Chapter, PI identified alumni in the area to take part in the event.

The call on “The New American Administration and the Middle East: Opportunities for Change” was part of the monthly alumni conference call series. The call featured Professor Yossi Shain, President of the Western Galilee College and Head of the Harold Hartog School of Government and Policy at Tel Aviv University. Professor Shain led a discussion on the impact of the elections of Barack Obama on Israel and its position in the Middle East, including the role that the United States should play in changing the realities in the Middle East, the possibilities available for the new president and the impact of American involvement on future negotiations.

The presidential candidates were building their foreign policy teams, preparing to tackle the international challenges that the United States will be facing in the coming years, and determining the role that the United States will play in the international arena, specifically in the Middle East. PI hosted one of Israel’s leading professional negotiators who presented to the alumni his views and advice for the next Middle East Foreign Policy Team on Iran, Syria, and the Palestinians. Mr. Cristal is a Lt. Colonel (R.) in the IDF Crisis Negotiation Unit, and lectures worldwide on crisis negotiation and complex crisis management. In cooperation with Harvard Prof. Roger Fisher, he established Israeli Palestinian Negotiating Partners, a network of negotiators in the region. He is a research fellow at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, founding member of Reut Institute, and a visiting scholar in leading international negotiation institutions and think-tanks worldwide.
